A LIST OF MAORI FISH NAMES

ORIGINALLY, this list was written about the year 1920. It has been several times revised since that date. In its compilation I received much valuable assistance from the late Elsdon Best, as well as from friends in all parts of New Zealand. In recent years some problems of nomenclature have been solved; some may never be solved. The list is still unsatisfactory because of the large number of Maori terms to which no specific fish name can be applied. All terms added to the original list culled from Williams' Maori Dictionary have been verified before use. The list is presented in the hope that, eventually, at least some of the names will be applied to the actual known species. The position is complicated by a multitude of synonyms. In this respect our English nomenclature is not much better than that of the Maori. An example will suffice. The king-fish of the South Island is the hake of Wellington and the lemon fish of Auckland. This is the species, Jordanidia solandri, called tikati by Wellington Maoris; while the true North Island king-fish is the haku, Seriola grandis. Often, in Maori days, the same species was called by different names by different tribes, and, naturally, this adds to our difficulties. Again, the twentieth century Maori is not a fisherman as were his forebears; so in many localities even the names of the common fish are lost and pakeha names are being used instead. The student is referred to my Bibliography of New Zealand Fishes, Fisheries Bull. 1, 68 pp., 1927, for a complete reference list of New Zealand fishes and their common and scientific names.
